How to Protect Your Data From These 3 Common Disasters

Thankfully, natural disasters like floods and tornadoes are rare. However, there are plenty of other threats that are much more prominent, and they can strike at any time. This makes it dangerous to be complacent about your company’s business continuity plan, especially since you have no way of predicting these events ahead of time. This forces you to have the mindset of “If not now, when?”


What follows is a list of common disasters that every business needs to be prepared to deal with.

Fires
No matter what kind of business you run, there’s always the chance of an in-house fire. Any power strip that’s overburdened is at risk of being overloaded which can spark a fire. A fire can spread quickly and cause all sorts of damage to your physical infrastructure, your digital assets, and of course, your bottom line.

Hardware Failure
Hardware failure is hardly the first thing you consider when you think about disasters, but it’s still a major risk and can be as devastating as a natural disaster. Technology isn’t destined or designed to last forever, so you need to plan for a critical piece of hardware failing when you least expect it--especially for workstations and servers containing data that isn’t easily replaced. Replacing hardware isn’t cheap, and in many cases it can break your budget to the point where it takes months to recover (and that’s not even mentioning the downtime hardware failure can cause).

Power Surges
Electrical storms and power outages can really mess with your technology. A particularly nasty storm could cause a power surge that fries any unprotected hardware in your office. It would certainly hinder operations if a power surge hit your servers and workstations. Losing data from a disaster like this is extra frustrating because it’s so preventable. Always make sure to have your critical technology hooked up to a surge protector and your data backed up. Otherwise, you could be facing untold downtime and expensive repair costs.

All three of these instances make it much more difficult, if not impossible, for your business to run as needed. To keep these troubles from overtaking your company, consider implementing a powerful business continuity plan with a focus on Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR). Cloud-based BDR allows your business to take frequent backups of your data and store them in a secure, off-site location for later recovery. With BDR, your data can be restored in the event that the original server is rendered unusable. By doing this, the BDR solution minimizes downtime by allowing you to return to normal operations as quickly as possible. It’s the best way to combat natural disasters, hardware failures, and other disasters that might otherwise derail operations.
